Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
