Historical Context
Nottingham Forest v Malmö and memories of 1979. The two clubs have a historical link, also meeting in Forest's previous European adventure in the UEFA Cup of 1995-96, but it is the European Cup final from 1979 that entwines these two together, with Britain's first £1m player Trevor Francis heading the only goal of a pretty miserable final to clinch eternal glory for the Forest supporters.
"The legendary management duo, grey-sweatered and anonymous amid all the excitement and joy, stood for a moment on a bench calmly observing the revelry," noted the journalist. Their achievement was an outstanding achievement that it is hard to see being repeated – from the lower league to European stage in a short period."
Worth mentioning to reflect upon Malmö, who became the first, and to date the last Scandinavian side to reach the final under British coach Houghton.
The current fixture is a far cry from that peak, closer perhaps to the previous continental meeting between Forest and Malmö in that era. Forest are full of confidence after defeating Liverpool convincingly at Liverpool's home on Saturday, while Malmö have been inactive since 9 November following the end of the Swedish league season. The general expectation is on the English side tonight.
Numerous other matches on offer in this live coverage. The Glasgow club have already been lost to a Braga this season. Rangers are rock bottom of the competition table at the midpoint of the league phase with precisely zero points. They desperately need a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a comeback for a knockout position.
Updates will continue with all the evening matches and provide the most recent results from the concluded fixtures, including the Birmingham match and Feyenoord v Celtic.
