Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Worries
However, doctors and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting products of unknown origin.
Several professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Enforcement
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.
Some content creators try to circumvent the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.
Platform Response and Content Elimination
According to TikTok, the service has removed violative content and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Operations
Research also found communities with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of users, populated with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for preparing or injecting at residence.
Within moments of joining one community, a seller posted contact information, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Item Information and Pricing
Within these groups, messages show dark colored packages with postal service labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Security Actions
A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Cautions
“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these digital products may not contain what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to recent price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to social media. But fake injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has previously seen patients injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Statement
A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious health risks”.
